bidayuh dance

Mostly ritual

Tarian Sigar Pirami

Tarian Tolak Bala -tolak bala, meaning to push away bad luck (tolak = push/repel, bala = bad luck/ evil entities) -This dance is believed normally performed before the harvest to ask for blessings and protection of the community.

Rejang Beuh is the name of the dance in Biatah, while in Bukar-Sadong, it is known as langi, in Bau-Jagoi as tigal bilangi. The dance is performed by two male dancers. The storyline of the dance follows the adventures of a Bidayuh legendary warrior, Madu Ujong, who had been commanded by King Bintang to fight a mystical bird called Tingkilang Raman or Roh (Soul) Eagle. The purpose of the fight is to determine who will win the hands of the king’s daughter, Dara Buda. Madu Ujong and Tingkilang Raman are both exceptional dancers; their movements cover every inch of the stage, utilizing various styles and choreography following the interchangeably fast and slow beats of the gong and gendang. Whenever they run into each other, they will pose in a threatening manner, as if ready to strike at one another.

Tarian Langi Julang

Other ritual dances include langi julang, nguguoh or simutur and rejang padi or ngirindang.

ngirindang or sambut padi bauh
